Most SoCal Nonprofit Jobs Pay Under $25 an Hour. Here's Where the Pay Changes.

If you're looking for nonprofit work in Southern California, you won't run short of openings. You will notice that most of them pay less than $25 an hour.

We looked at every hourly job live on SoCal Nonprofit Jobs as of September 30. There were 1,347. Of those, 927 start below $25 an hour. That's nearly 70%.

That number isn't spread evenly. Starting pay depends almost entirely on the kind of work.

The biggest categories pay the least

Direct Care is the largest category on the board. Together with Programs, it accounts for just over 500 hourly openings, and both average a starting rate around $21 an hour.

These roles are the front door to nonprofit work. Many don't require a degree or a license, which makes them accessible. It also keeps pay low. Even the top of the posted range doesn't move much: Direct Care roles average $23.32 at the high end.

Where the pay changes

The jump happens at licensure.

Social Work averages $24.89 an hour to start. Counseling averages $27.02. Clinical averages $34.76, and only 12% of Clinical roles start under $25.

The gap between Direct Care and Clinical is about $13 an hour. On a full-time schedule, that's nearly $28,000 a year.

What this means for your search

If you're starting out, Direct Care and Programs are the easiest way in. Look at the full posted range, not just the starting rate. A wide range tells you there's room to grow in the role. A narrow one tells you the raise will likely come from a new position.

If you're already in direct care, the path to higher pay usually runs through a credential. In California, that often means a BSW or MSW, then an associate registration (ASW, AMFT or APCC) and supervised hours toward licensure. Many of the organizations hiring direct care staff also hire clinicians, so a move up can happen without leaving your employer. Ask about tuition support and clinical supervision before you accept an offer.

About the data: Based on live listings on SoCal Nonprofit Jobs as of September 30, 2026. Averages use the posted starting (minimum) hourly rate for roles paid hourly. Categories with fewer than 20 hourly openings, and Retail (mostly thrift-store roles), are not shown.
