About the role

Outreach Specialist

The Outreach Specialist reports directly to the Outreach Coordinator at the site and provides outreach services to assist veterans experiencing homelessness and at-risk veterans by connecting them to housing and comprehensive support services that will lead to them reaching their highest level of independence.

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Responsibilities

  • Publicizes services for homeless veterans by visiting local facilities such as shelters, treatment programs, transitional housing, sober living programs, soup kitchens and other locations where people experiencing homelessness may congregate
  • Maintains an database of client information and referrals to the programs to track veterans referred the program and for screening appointments
  • Schedules screenings and transportation to the local U.S.VETS site as required on behalf of veterans leaving treatment or other facilities that contact U.S.VETS with potential client referrals
  • Assists with client transportation for program events
  • Collaborates and coordinates with external service provider staff to ensure all required paperwork for each client file is collected in a timely manner
  • Produces a weekly report of veterans encountered by the outreach team
  • Assists with communication of upcoming projects and special events sponsored by the outreach team
  • Attends the weekly outreach meeting of all U.S.VETS' site outreach staff
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Requirements

  • One year of experience in social services
  • Employment at U.S.VETS for at least three months may substitute for one year of experience
  • Strong oral, written, and communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work within a team
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Valid driver's license. Must meet company insurance requirements and complete a provided driver training course

Preferences

  • Bachelor's degree in social services or related field
  • Experience working with people experiencing homelessness and/or the veteran population
