About the role

Resident Monitor Location: Los Angeles, California Organizational Overview

For over 30 years, Upward Bound House (UBH) has stood as a leading service provider and advocate dedicated to ending the cycle of family homelessness. We believe true solutions go far beyond just providing a temporary roof. Our team delivers a compassionate continuum of care, walking alongside families every step of the way as they transition from immediate crisis housing into stable, permanent homes. We operate in a fast-paced, collaborative environment built on empathy, efficiency, and mutual support, where every team member is united by a shared drive to create lasting community change.

What You Will Do (Essential Responsibilities)

As a Resident Monitor, you will maintain operational safety and provide foundational community support through the following core duties:

  • Foster a Safe Community: Actively monitor the site, manage strict entry/exit visitor logs, ensure only authorized individuals access the facility, and conduct regular safety walk-throughs.

  • Support Daily Living: Assist families with navigating community living guidelines, monitor curfews, and help maintain a clean, organized, and home-like environment (includes light cleaning and tidying of shared spaces).

  • Provide Grounded Presence: Respond to resident needs and sensitive crisis situations with calm, professional control. Utilize proven conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques when operational challenges arise.

  • Communicate & Collaborate: Maintain highly accurate, detailed daily shift logs and comprehensive incident reports. Participate in structured, through shift handovers to ensure total team alignment.

  • Deliver Compassionate Care: Interact with all residents, guests, and staff members with the utmost respect, cultural sensitivity, professional boundaries, and dignity.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent required: some college coursework or related certifications are a strong plus.

  • Experience: Professional or volunteer experience working with a residential facility, emergency shelter, community living program, or broader social services environment is strongly preferred.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to remain calm, focused, and effective in fast-paced or emotionally charged situations.

  • Operational Support: Comfortable assisting with light facility maintenance, cleaning tasks, and overall organizational tidiness.

  • Technical Literacy: Basic computer literacy required for utilizing digital logging software, sending emails, and completing shift reports.

  • Transportation: A valid California driver's license and reliable, insured auto transportation.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Our team works directly on the frontlines of crisis intervention. Candidates should be comfortable walking, climbing stairs, standing for extended periods, and navigating a dynamic environment.

Because we serve families experiencing acute crises, you may encounter individuals dealing with illness, substance use challenges, or high-stress trauma. A successful candidate will possess strong boundaries, emotional resilience, and a commitment to safety and de-escalation.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
