JOB SUMMARY: AbilityFirst's Internship program offers a unique opportunity for current participants at our sites to gain real-world experience within the Communications Department. This internship is ideal for a motivated college student pursuing a degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field to gain practical experience in a dynamic nonprofit setting. Interns will work directly with the Marketing and Communications Manager and communications staff to support storytelling, content creation, and community engagement initiatives.

Ideal candidates will be self-motivated, hard-working, and creative. They will demonstrate a professional demeanor, work well with others, and have strong written and verbal communication skills.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Assist in drafting and editing content for social media
  • Help collect, organize, and share participant stories in a respectful and impactful way
  • Conduct research on communications strategies, media trends, and outreach best practices
  • Engage online community, explore social media partnership opportunities, and respond to messages
  • Review and report on key metrics for social media
  • Support the coordination and promotion of events and campaigns
  • Assist with digital and print outreach materials
  • Take and organize photos or videos from events and activities
  • Help maintain consistent branding and messaging across all platforms
  • Provide administrative support to the communications and development teams
  • Maintain organized digital files of media assets and communications materials

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be currently attending a university or college pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's Degree
  • Must have a Valid Driver's License or State ID
  • Must be at least 18-24 years of age
  • Interest in Communications or Marketing preferred
  • Familiarity with design software (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Affinity), CRMs (Constant Contact, Mailchimp), or platforms like Hootsuite is a plus
  • Comfortable working with diverse communities and passionate about accessibility and inclusion
  • Familiar with AbilityFirst and services at our sites is a plus

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Changes in environment between office and outdoors. Physical effort/lifting up to 15-20 pounds at times.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Mandated Reporting Requirements under California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act. Vaccination requirements for Pertussis, Measles, and Influenza. Candidates must successfully complete: TB Test, Live Scan (fingerprinting/background check), Drug Screening, Physical/fitness-for-duty clearance.
