About the role

POSITION OVERVIEW Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California (AJSOCAL) seeks a Removal Defense Supervising Attorney to join our team in Los Angeles. AJSOCAL is the nation's largest legal and civil rights organization advocating for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs). Founded in 1983, we support over 15,000 individuals and organizations annually through free legal help, impact litigation, and policy advocacy.

Our services include Family-Based Immigration, Asylum, Temporary Protected Status, Violence Against Women Act, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, T-Visa, U-Visa support, and free citizenship workshops. We also lead community-centered initiatives including the Asian Language Legal Intake Project (ALLIP), the Survivor and Family Empowerment (SAFE) Project, Housing Preservation (HP) Program, and Health Access Project (HAP). Our Impact Litigation Team creates systemic change while our Policy Team shapes laws affecting Asian American and immigrant families across California.

RESPONSIBILITIES Design and implement creative service delivery models while effectively leveraging community partnerships and support. Supervise removal defense cases including detained individuals. Conduct regular in-person immigration court appearances and meet with detained individuals.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • J.D. and active California State Bar License or licensure from another U.S. state
  • Driver's License required (position requires regular travel to meet with detained individuals and court appearances)
  • Minimum five (5) years of removal defense experience, including detained cases
  • At least one (1) year of experience working with vulnerable populations, survivors of abuse, human trafficking, or other trauma, and/or working with immigrant and refugee children
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to frequently changing circumstances, policies, and conditions
  • Passion for social justice for immigrants

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Seven (7) years of removal defense experience
  • At least one (1) year of supervisor experience (may be concurrent with removal defense experience)
